Site Assessments

Before you buy or move kitchen equipment, we check whether the space can carry it, power it and ventilate it properly. Our site assessments help restaurants, schools, canteens and takeaways in Pretoria and Gauteng avoid costly changes after delivery.

What we check on site before you place an order

A proper site assessment saves time and stops repeat trips. We visit your premises in Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Kempton Park, Boksburg or Randburg and measure the exact working area, entry points, clearances and service points for the equipment you want to install. That includes fryers, toasters, mixers, microwaves, chafing dishes, cold counters and used equipment that may need some adjustment before it goes back into service.

We look at floor space, door widths, passage turns, ceiling height, heat build-up and where staff will move during service. In many kitchens the biggest problem is not the machine itself, it is where trays, baskets, ingredients and people need to pass each other. We also check for load-shedding planning, because a unit that draws well on paper can still become difficult if the power supply and backup setup are not sorted properly.

  • Dimensions of the kitchen, store room and serving area
  • Power points, circuit loading and switchboard access
  • Ventilation, extraction and heat dispersion
  • Water, waste and drainage points where needed
  • Safe access for delivery and positioning
  • Workflow around prep, cooking, holding and cleaning

How the assessment is done from first call to final notes

We start with a brief from your side. Tell us what you are replacing, what you want to add and when you need it on site. Then we arrange a visit with the right person from our team. For kitchen upgrades, we often send the Sales Manager and the Installation Technician together so the measurements and the practical layout are checked on the same visit.

During the visit we take measurements, note the service connections and ask about your trading hours, staff numbers and peak periods. If the kitchen runs during school breaks, lunch rush or weekend service, that affects the final setup. We also check whether the area is inside a mall, freestanding site or municipal building, because access and compliance differ quite a bit.

  • Initial call or email with your equipment list
  • Site visit booked around your trading hours
  • Measurements and utility checks taken on site
  • Assessment notes prepared with practical recommendations
  • Quote issued for supply, installation or reconfiguration if required

The result is a clear view of what will fit, what must change and what should be avoided before money is spent.

Power, heat and ventilation checks for Gauteng kitchens

Most kitchen failures start with the basics. A fryer may need a dedicated supply, a toaster bank may place a heavy short-term load on the circuit and a mixer or microwave may be fine on its own but not fine once the kitchen is under full use. We check whether your existing power setup is suitable for the equipment mix you want. If not, we flag the gap before delivery, not after the electrician has left.

Ventilation matters just as much. In Silverton, Pretoria Central and older premises around Gauteng we often find kitchens with limited extraction or poor air movement. That leads to excess heat, damp walls and uncomfortable working conditions. On coastal moves we also watch for humidity, but in Gauteng the bigger issue is often heat build-up and dust. If the room needs better extraction or a revised equipment layout we will recommend it plainly, with practical measurements not guesswork.

We also check whether the floor can take the weight and whether the path from delivery point to final position has any tight turns, steps or low door frames. That is especially important for used equipment that may be heavier than it looks.

What you receive after the inspection

After the site assessment, you get clear feedback on the space and the next step. Where needed, we can quote for equipment supply, servicing, delivery and positioning, installation, workshop refurbishment or kitchen reconfiguration. If the current setup can work as is, we say so. If it needs changes first, we say that too.

Our notes are useful for owners, chefs, procurement staff and contractors. They help you compare quotes properly because the measurements and conditions are already known. That means fewer surprises when the equipment arrives and fewer arguments about who must fix what later on.

  • Equipment suitability notes
  • Space and access measurements
  • Power and ventilation remarks
  • Recommended changes before supply or installation
  • Optional quote for associated work

Turnaround times and booking lead times

In Pretoria and nearby areas we try to schedule site assessments quickly, often within a few working days depending on the route and the size of the job. Larger projects, kitchen moves or multiple branches may need more time so we can plan the visit properly. If you are opening a new site in Centurion or fitting out a unit in Midrand, give us a little notice and we will set the assessment around your contractor schedule.

For urgent replacement work we can often prioritise an inspection if the equipment is down and the kitchen is under pressure. If the matter involves a breakdown, we can combine the site assessment with a servicing or repair visit where practical. That saves time and keeps the kitchen moving.

We keep the process straightforward. You will know when we are coming, what we are checking and when to expect the feedback.

Pricing approach and maintenance intervals

Site assessments are priced according to location, size of the premises and the detail required. A single equipment replacement in Pretoria Central is not the same as a multi-point assessment across a larger canteen or franchise site in Boksburg or Randburg. We quote fairly based on the actual work, and where possible we can combine the assessment with other services to keep your total cost down.

For busy kitchens we recommend repeating a site assessment whenever you change your menu, add heavier equipment, move from gas to electric or reconfigure the cooking line. A good rule is to review the layout every 12 to 24 months, or sooner if you are adding new appliances, changing service volume or struggling with heat, power trips or staff congestion.

If your kitchen runs near the coast or in high-humidity conditions, equipment checks may need to be more frequent because corrosion and moisture affect cabinets, hinges and electrical parts faster. Regular servicing helps, but layout and power checks still need attention from time to time.

Who handles the work at Afchain

Afchain Catering Equipment has been serving Pretoria and Gauteng since 2011 from our base in Silverton. Our team includes Mpho Sekgobela, Annelie van Wyk, Sibusiso Dlamini, Kagiso Molefe, Nadia Petersen and Tshepo Mokoena. If you need a site assessment before buying new equipment or moving used equipment into service, email quotes@afchain.co.za with a short description of your kitchen and the items you want to use. Include photos if you have them. The more detail we get up front the better we can prepare for the visit.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a site assessment before buying new catering equipment?

Yes, especially if the kitchen is tight on space, power or ventilation. It helps confirm what will fit and what must be changed first.

Can you assess used equipment before we bring it into the kitchen?

Yes. We check the space, entry route and service points so used equipment can be positioned and connected properly.

How fast can you do a site assessment in Gauteng?

Often within a few working days, depending on the area and the size of the job. Urgent cases can sometimes be prioritised.
